DANGEROUS CHEST PAINS
There are several chest pains that can be dangerous if you are not treated immediately. I have listed down here main causes for chest pain.
- Ischemic Heart Disease(IHD)
- Aortic Dissection
- Pulmonary Embolism
- Pericarditis
- Pneumonia
If IHD associates with left ventricular failure, you can have these symptoms too. Orthopnoea (Shortness of breath that occurs when lying flat),Paroxysmal Nocturnal Dyspnea (attacks of severe shortness of breath and coughing that generally occur at night. It usually awakes the person from sleep) and pink color frothy sputum can be seen.
If IHD associates with right ventricular failure, you may have fatigue, anorexia, abdominal distension and ankle swelling as symptoms.
If IHD leads to Myocardial Infarction(death of cardiac muscles), You might have these symptoms pain at rest, retro-sternal pain that persists more than 20 minutes and pain does not relieve by sublingual Glyceryl trinitrate.
Aortic dissection means tearing of diseased aortic wall due to sudden blood pressure changes. As symptoms, you will have these symptoms sudden severe tearing type chest pain, central pain, radiate to arm and back, Dizziness, numbness, pain and coldness of arm and/or transient weakness of the part of the body.
Pulmonary embolism means sudden blockage of pulmonary arteries from blood clots which is mainly arising from deep veins of calf or pelvic veins. Sudden onset of pain, pleuritic type (sharp, stabbing, burning or dull pain in the right or left side of the chest during breathing) chest pain, tachypnoea, haemoptysis(coughing up of blood), previous history of deep vein thrombosis and long term immobilization following surgery or travelling.
Pericarditis means inflammation of pericardium(outer cover of heart). You will feel diffuse stabbing type pain. Pain aggravated by deep breathing and movements and relieved by leaning forward. Pain associates with dyspnoea too.
In pneumonia, You feel pleuritic type pain.Pain aggravate with breathing and cough.Pain associates with fever, wheezing and haemoptysis.
